Orientation

The Internet adds a way of representing the world that overlaps our traditional physical landmarks. Orienting ourselves in time and space is a primary necessity; today, the interlocking of orientation modes blurs the long history of our relationship to different spaces.

Digital print on Plexiglas, 161 x 125

The installation 1=Plusieurs unfolds our relationship to space through the evolution of our representations of the world from antiquity to the present day. While complexity was revealed during the Renaissance, the new use of perspective allowed people to focus on a single point. Today, the complexity revealed by interdependence is displayed as much in the image of the Internet as in similar images of galaxies. To evoke this long maturation process, the staging of 1=plusieurs is that of a Renaissance female bust gazing at a Tuscan landscape embedded with images. Printed on Plexiglas, this representation synthesizes our understanding of space, of spaces through which we position ourselves.
